Dongfeng Mage 2025 Review – Almost There… And Closer Than You Think
The Dongfeng Mage 2025 is one of those cars that immediately makes you think:
“Okay… this is actually pretty good.”
And the more time you spend with it, the more you start to understand what it’s trying to achieve.
It’s not just another budget SUV.
In many ways, it’s a well-thought-out and capable product.
But at the same time, you still notice small areas where refinement hasn’t fully caught up yet.
It’s close — very close — but not completely there.

Platform & Specifications
The Dongfeng Mage is built on the DSMA 2.0 platform, which is designed to support multiple powertrains, including combustion and electrified systems. It houses MacPherson independent front suspension system in the front and multilink independent suspension in the rear, offering a great balance between comfort and performance driving experience. Additionally it offers a 50:50 weight distribution. The DSMA 2.0 platform is an important part of this car. It shows that Dongfeng is:
building scalable architecture
preparing for future electrification
thinking beyond a single model
This car is part of a broader development direction, not just a standalone product.
Key specifications:
1.5L turbocharged engine
Around 200 horsepower
305 Nm torque
7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT)
Front-wheel drive
0–100 km/h: around 8 seconds
Top speed: around 190 km/h
Dimensions:
Length: approx. 4650 mm
Width: approx. 1905 mm
Wheelbase: approx. 2775 mm
On paper, this puts the Mage directly into competition with European compact SUVs such as Volkswagen Tiguan and cars like Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage.

First Impressions – Strong, Modern, Confident
From the outside, the Dongfeng Mage makes a strong impression.
It’s a modern, aggressive-looking SUV with clean lines and solid road presence. It doesn’t feel cheap or outdated — quite the opposite. The design is bold, and it clearly aims to stand out.
You get:
sharp LED lighting
strong proportions
sporty visual elements
Including quad exhaust-style outlets.
However, those exhaust tips are not real — they are purely visual. It’s a design choice that adds aggression, but also creates a small disconnect between appearance and reality.

Driving Experience – Where It Actually Improves
The Dongfeng Mage drives well — and in some areas, it’s a clear step forward.
It has enough power
It feels stable
It’s comfortable for longer drives
But more importantly, the driving feel itself is much better calibrated than expected.
Throttle response
Unlike some earlier Chinese cars, the Mage has a well-calibrated pedal.
no delay in response
smooth and linear power delivery
easy to control at low speeds
This makes city driving much more natural and predictable.
A big reason for this is likely the in-house powertrain setup, which allows better integration and calibration between engine and transmission.
Highway behavior
At higher speeds, the car:
remains very stable
is comfortable for longer distances
easy to cruise with confidence
There is some wind noise above 100 km/h, but it doesn’t take away from usability.
This is still a car you can comfortably take on longer trips.
Steering and control
The steering is electronically assisted, and you can adjust it between three settings.
slightly delayed response
overall quite stiff
provides solid feedback
Once you get used to it, it actually gives you a good sense of control.
Suspension and road feel
The car feels connected to the road, with a setup leaning slightly toward a sportier feel.
stiffer over smaller bumps
can feel a bit jumpy over larger imperfections (typical SUV behavior)
noticeable forward dive under braking
It’s not soft — but it’s controlled.
Everyday usability
One of the strongest points is how easy it is to live with:
most important functions are accessible from the steering wheel
cruise control is simple and works very well
start/stop operation is intuitive
Everything feels designed for real driving, not just features on paper.
Overall, the driving experience is a clear improvement and shows that Dongfeng is closing the gap where it matters most — in how the car actually feels on the road.

Final Verdict – 90% There
The Dongfeng Mage 2025 is:
modern
capable
easy to use
well designed
well-calibrated in everyday driving
stable and usable even on longer highway drives
But also:
some wind noise at higher speeds
slight delay in steering response
suspension can feel stiff on smaller bumps and a bit jumpy on larger ones
still missing that final level of polish in overall refinement
Warranty & Options
Dongfeng adds strong value with:
5-year / 150,000 km warranty (whichever comes first)
5 color options available without additional cost
This reinforces the idea that the car is positioned as a high-value, no-compromise daily option.
Would I Choose It?
If you want:
practicality
technology
value
a well-calibrated and easy driving experience
It’s a strong option.
If you prioritize:
ultimate driving precision
top-tier refinement
fully polished “premium” feel
You may still prefer other alternatives but probably at much higher price range. The Dongfeng Mage start from "only" 23900€ (E2 trim) up to 24900€ (E3 trim).
Final Thought
The Dongfeng Mage feels like a car from a manufacturer that is very close to getting everything right.
And that’s exactly why it’s interesting.
Because once that final gap is closed — especially in refinement and consistency — cars like this won’t just compete… they will become very hard to ignore.
